What is a Doula?

The term “Doula” is a Greek word meaning ‘woman caregiver’. We now use the word to describe a trained and experienced labor companion who provides the woman and her partner continuous emotional support, physical comfort, and assistance in obtaining information before, during, and just after childbirth.

Let me introduce myself:

My name is Jessica Robertson and I have been a birth doula since July of 2009. I am originally from Iowa where I attended the University of Iowa for a Bachelors degree in Global Health and International Studies, while studying pre-med. I moved to Milwaukee upon graduation in December of 2008. I now live in Shorewood with my husband, Grant and our dog, Lily. Aside from my doula clients, I work at Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center in Glendale. I have always had a passion for helping others and through my experience in many aspects of health care in college, I found my calling to assist women through labor and delivery. Since college, I have been involved with anything I can regarding birth, including the decision to become a certified birth doula until I complete graduate school at Marquette University to become a Certified Nurse Midwife. I am passionate about pregnancy, birth, babies, and everything in between!! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns or for any further information including helpful resources.
